Dr Gangadhar Bandyopadhyay (Banerjee), an Associate Professor, graduated with Honours in Economics having Mathematics, English and Bengali as subsidiary subjects and post graduated in Economics (special papers-Statistics and Econometrics) from Visva Bharati, Central University, Santiniketan, India. He was awarded PhD degree in Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and LLB degree from Bhagalpur University. He was associated with many projects viz,. (i) Impact of High-yielding Varieties of Food grains in the Eastern Region of India, funded by UNDP Global Project and piloted by Agro-economic Research Centre , Visva Bharati , Santiniketan; (ii) Efficiency of Small Farms under Varying Tennurial Condition funded by ICAR and commissioned by Department of Economics and PoliticL Science Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, (iii) Review of Indian Planning funded by Planning Commission, Govt. of India and undertaken by Professor Emeritus Ashok Rudra , Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata; (iii) Impact of Rice Technology on Small and Marginal Farmers in Burdwan, District, West Bengal, funded by Directorate of Agriculture, Govt. of West Bengal and conducted by Agro-Economic Research Centre, Santiniketan etc...
Besides, he undertook number of consultancy services mainly, (a) Impact of Forword Market Commission on Production and Productivity of Small Turmeric growers in Maharashtra, (b) Economics of Pulses Production and Processing, (c) Economics of Mango Cultivation in three States, (d) Rural Entrepreneurship Development Programme in five States—An Impact Assessment, (e) Impact of Rural Godown Schemes to meet the requirements of farmers for storing farm produce and agricultural inputs etc . It may be said to his credit that he submitted a report on “ Best Practices for Creating a Successful National Financial Inclusion Platform for India” to World Bank at the instance of Source Trace India, Inc.
Dr Bandyopadhyay gained 39 years experience in corporate, out of which 15 years in teaching, 20 years in research and 4 years in administration. He served as a lecturer in Economics at Suri Vidya Sagar College, Government Sponsored, District Birbhum, and Visva Bharati Central University, Santiniketan, India. He worked as Senior Investigator in Sundarban Development Board, Development and Planning Department, Govt. of West Bengal; Research Officer in Economics in Tea Board, Kolkata, Economic Analyst in Uttar Pradesh Development System Corporation Ltd, A subsidiary to Govt. of Uttar Pradesh; General Manager in National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Head Office, Mumbai and Assistant Professor in Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai.
During his tenure in NABARD, he was a core faculty for a period of 12 years and was entrusted with the responsibility of (a) fixing the Annual Course Calendar (b) preparing day to day schedule of training programmes with duration of each course, (c) updating the course materials, (d) ensuring nominations of participants, (d) assuring guest faculty, (e) arranging for field exposures etc. He conducted a minimum of 50 work shops on (i) Training needs of Regional Rural Banks, (ii) Cooperative Banks, (iii) Development Action Plans of Cooperative Banks and Regional Banks, (iv) High Value Investments, (v) Implementations of Agricultural Rural Debt Relief Scheme,( vii) Central Sponsored Schemesetc.
He was a member on various committees like (ai) Land Tenure System in North East, (b) Financial Sector Reforms in North East, (c) Nagaland State Marketing Board, (d) Revival of Cooperative Credit Structure (e) Agri expo in North East , (f) Bamboo Mission etc.. In addition he was in the Board of Nagaland Regional Rural Bank and Nagaland State Cooperative Bank.
Dr Bandyopadhyay received (i) Faculty Development Programme from Bankers Training Institute of Rural Development , Reserve Bank of India, ( ii) Agricultural Project Course , College of Agricultural Banking (CAB), Pune; (iii) Trainers’ Training Programme , Bankers’ Institute of Rural Development, Lucknow . Besides, he had an exposure visit to Central Bank of Phillipines, Manila for a week etc...
He published 9 reports , of which 5 reports on Techno- economic survey of Tea Industry ,viz.., (i) Tripura, (ii) Darjeeling, (iii) Himachal Pradesh, (iv) Kottayam and Iddukki, (v) Nilgiris, and (v) Assam; and remaining 4 reports on Ex-post Evaluation Reports on ( vi) Inland Fisheries in Assam,(vii) Poultry in West Bengal,(viii) Dairy in Darjeeling, ( ix) Fishery in Nadia District , West Bengal. He published as many as 200 papers in various disciplines like agriculture, waste land development, micro finance, medicinal and aromatic plants, agriculture credit, non farm sector, rural development, handloom and handicrafts, rural poverty, dry lands, water scarcity, rural infrastructure, tea, floriculture, tourism in Nagaland, horticulture, vegetables, etc in reputed journals of National interest and presented a minimum 40 papers in National conferences. It may be said to his credit that he published 15 books. He is practioneer from farm economics to socio economics.
His area of specialization is Research Methodology, Project Management, Business Mathematics, Managerial Economics, Business environment and Entrepreneurial Development Programme, evaluation studies, special studies, project appraisal, etc..
